Brandon Miller, a student, says, “Earth day is important because it kind of makes people realize that earth is very special we need to keep it sanitary and we need to take care of it as if it were one of our family.”
Another way these kids are taking care of the earth is through the giving tree. Students made up ornaments with different pledges like I will recycle or I will reduce my carbon footprint. They take that pledge off the tree, take it home and follow the commitment as well as encourage family members to do the same.
Lauren Chambliss, a student, says, “The giving tree is very exciting because it's seeing our idea actually happen and it's cool to let everybody else know about the environment.”
When Robin Killough started this project she had no idea how much it would grow but it's gotten so big they now have a dumpster out back called big blue.
“It's a big project and it's a lot of time and effort from not just me but from the children and the parents but we were able to get a recycle bin we were able to get a recycle bin at our school hoping that it will go out into the community,” said Killough.
The kids are hoping that they'll have everyone thinking green.
The Community Green Award is given each month to a school or business that is helping to preserve the environment.
